1. She uses I in the beginning to explain misunderstood statements made in her last article. The "I" states her position on the issue but profuse use of it in the intro causes the reader to question her ability to accept opposing points of view.
"I" was also used in the second paragraph to define herself into a group of "Typical Black Everywomen". She uses this to place herself in a more common position as the group identified. Along with this "I", she uses "You" ask the other group of "Typical Ungendered Whitr Person".
The use of "I" is also spread out in the beginning sentences of each paragrach to state her point of view. She states what she feels to bring up the problems that she sees as a prospector. She uses the "I" to convey what her thoughts are.

2. The author uses questions to quiestion the tactics of the US CIA. The questions that are used is usually in the rhetorical form asking the audience "Is this Right?". In her body paragraphs, most questions are used agaist the US CIA and asking if what they are doing to protect the country the correct way.

3. THe writer tries to construct a group that opposes the tactics of the US CIA and government, but throughout the whole article, the personal "I" is used to voice her own ideas that she loses the audience. Instead of sounding concerned, her form of speech sounds like she's criticizing more than asking for opinions of the readers. The way she wrote actually gave me a negative feeling about her as a a writer. This, however, may appeal to those that have been persecuted for the way they look or just becuase of the race they are.

This is the breakdown of the introductory paragraph in my issue letter revised:

1.The Human Genome Project started a revolution in the world of science. The newly developed techniques to map genes started the mission to unravel the human genome in 1911.
2. Many fields that have been around for thousands of years was impacted by major discoveries of the human genome project, a field that just started less than a century ago.
3. The world of genetics have made advancements towards medical technology, pharmaceuticals, agricultural developement, and even developed new industries of biotechnology and many more that affect the lives that we live.
4. In the light of newly acquired knowledge, the responsibilities of professionals who handle the information have been increased.
5.The information that can be provided by the human genome has become a pre-history of medical records.
6.Instead of recording the medical illnesses a person has had in the past, it can document the illnesses a person is pre-dispositional for.
7.The new findings of how to manipulate genetics has also provided new stands to further research the extent of using genetics as a template.
8.The ways that this information can be used effects more than the daily lives of all who have had a genetics test; it can also affect the ethics of the professionals who can acquire this knowledge.

The emphasis on the paragraph I chose was to underline the fact that genetics testing is still a new concept and is not seen as a true medical procedure. The emphasis on the paragraph was not changed in the edits. Many of the edits I received was on making my sentences more fluent. There was a suggestion of splitting the paragraph into two sections instead on one to be more precise. It seems like the readers understood what the paragraph was stating but they did not understand what it was aiming for.

The paragraph I chose was from the body pf my causal paper. This actually confused the reader due to no introduction to what the paragraph’s purpose was. A few comments that were written stated the confusion of whether the paragraph chosen was the introduction because they didn’t understand the purpose of it. This actually hindered the editors to focus on what was trying to be emphasized.

Due to the confusion of the purpose of the paragraph, no major editing was done. If this was read with the introductory paragraph, the reader would understand what the point of the paragraph was.

Anti “God”

The words, “under God”, were entered in the pledge solely for religious reasons and is unconstitutional. –Judge Alfred T. Goodwin

It feels like other than justice and patriotism, it is also promoting monotheism.

The words “under God” is a religious term and constitutes the endorsement of religion by the government, the word God does not appear anywhere in the Constitution that regulates the separation of state and church showing that the founding fathers also believe the word “God” should not be associated to any national representation or documents. – Michael E. Separation of church and state is an ideal that was put forth by the forefathers to symbolize the freedom Americans should have and forcing religious words in national representations is violating the very freedom that was issued to the public. Saying the words doesn’t mean you believe God, so why push it on those who are not sincere.

Abolishment of the word, God or any other spiritual values may change the history of America from the national anthem to the president’s speeches ending in “God bless America”. This will impoverish public ceremonies stopping the use of prayers and soothing words towards an upper being.

The line of argument missing is the proposal of what should be done in order to solve this disagreement between the two opposing groups. None of the responses to the article or the article itself proposes any solution to the problem of disagreements to the incorporation of religion to state representations in the future. Banning the words “under God” from the Pledge may lead to more problems in the future with all historical documents or relics that include spiritual values from being used.

The context of the two paragraphs are similarbut the writing style is significantly different. The first paragraph was written with more passive verbs and more cohesive then the second paragraph. The second paragraph, although in fragments, contained more action verbs by stating straight out what the causes are that affect the issue. The first paragraph only states what needs to be done andsounds a lot more passive like suggestions. The first paragraph was thought out so the sentences were cohesive in that the ideas are linked in order of logic. The second paragraph are ideas that came up at that instance I was typing and are not linked at all to the previous sentences. They sound like it is a list I am making and is put in a paragraph form instread of bulleting it or numbering it. The first paragraph although not as convincing was coherent in what ideas were put forward.

One of the many causes that contribute to the lack of federal laws is the lack of guidelines genetics tests have to follow. Many issues relating to the privacy and use of genetics tests are only incorporated into other federal laws. Guidelines to genetics testing need to be unified. In many medical fields, the performance and results of each test requires consent by the patient, a record on the patient’s procedures are recorded, and an agreement to release the information is signed to be used by any practitioner or doctor. The guidelines for genetics testing hasn’t even been drafted compared to the multiple requirements written for a normal medical procedure. The basis of genetics testing has to be drafted in order for a unified federal law to be passed.

Genetics tests is a farily nerw procedure within the past century. The guidelines that regulates a gentics tests in very limited. Gentetics testing hascuased many ethical issue in by how it is used. 1. Getting an A in a college course requires studying, hard work, and attending classes. The only problem is even if you do all that you can to prepare for the class, you still may not get an A in a class. to physically get an A, you need to answer all questions correctly, follow guidelines to assignments that are given, and do work that is above average compared to the rest of your class.

2. A recent plane crash may be caused by pilot error, problems with the plane, or unwarranted conditions that may affect the efficiency of the mechanics of a plane. The loss of control, physical damage, and stopping of a plane are items that describe what a plane crash is. The time frame of the crash also contributes to the term recent.

3. The marriage of a particular couple may require two people to fall in love, get to know each other, and accept another person into your lives, but all will not be considered married until the official signing of legal documents pronouncing the couple man and wife.

4. The popularity of a movie may be based on good reviews, good plot or story, recognizable actors and actresses, and a movie that displays emotions the audience will understand. In order for a movie to become popular, the act of actually making the movie and completing it is required. An abundance of audience that watches the movie is also required.

Entropy is the chaotic nature of a system and according to the second law of thermodynamics, "all systems tend to disorder unless energy is invested to maintain their stability". This is true for the nature of all molecules but it can also be true for everyday life. Life itself is entropy, with work, school, sleep, and relaxation all part of a daily routine, one has to organize time for each activity. Everything that goes on in one's life is the chaotic events that boggle the physical and mental being. One has to use time and energy to organize all activities to time slots and plan how to use the least energy to obtain the most efficient arrangement. Even in every day activities such as cleaning a house shows the second law of thermodynamics. Dust particles, personal items, unwashed dishes, and grime in the shower all occur naturally without the aid of energy expense. The act of cleaning up to decrease the entropy in a house requires energy and time. This time and energy spent is the same as molecules using energy to allocate it to be more stable and organized. Entropy is seen everywhere you look, from wars to household chores, they all require the expense of energy to be stable and organized.

Ch. 13 Readings

In the readings in chapter 13 of A Rhetoric of Argument, the article "Growing More Food" uses more pathos to convinve the audience the importance of using biotechnology in growing foods. They describe how the world will have a scarce amount of food if the poeple don't start to grow foods more intelligently. They used examples of biotechnoogy to genetically alter the genes of foods to allow more product yield by making them immune to pests and viruses, growing larger crops, or allowing the crops to grow in harsh areas. The article also uses pathos with the mention of how populations in many countries don not get enogh foods today and in the future, the whole world can be in that position if we continue to use the old ways of agriculture.

President Bush's speech on biotechnology starts of with the arguments that biotechnolgy is unethical in many ways to diffedrent groups. He then uses these arguments to support his decision to continue with stem cell research defining the terms in which he would allow the research to continue. The definitions he puts in his arguments like what is a stem cell or what is considered to be a living cell versus a non-living cell. He uses operational definition of what anti-biotechs describe as a "potential for life". The argument of when an embryo would become a living cell is one of the main arguments in using stem cells in research. He also defined what is a potential living cell. He supports his argument withe the use of adult living cells like those from placentas and umbilical cords. President Bush's stand is to support Stem cell research as long as no new stem cells are grown. He announces the use of the already grown strains of stem cells. This will end the argument of destroying new lives by growing stems cells with potential life forming eggs.

The Backstreet Boys was said to be the group that started the whole pop genre of music. Their music has shaped the music that is made today to attract the younger generations. Their music has popularized the boy bands leading to formation of more boy bands like N'Sync, 98 Degrees, and various others. Although the boy band genre has been long gone since the turn of the century, the Backstreet Boys have established themselves as the leader of a new music industry and also as one of the many few surviving boy bands. They have reunited and is currently coming out with a new album that follows in the footsteps of their previous works.

Chapter 12 Rhetoric of Argument

In Chapter 12 of Rhetoric of Argument, Lukas uses the Ordinary I. He uses the "I" to connect with readers his own age and voicing his argument as an equal to the audience. He makes it sound a little less formal. His piece sounds like he is talkin to you and not at you. This is a less authorative piece because he is only basing his ideas on his beliefs. He puts a few examples in his argument but most of the article is in his own point of view.

Soyinka, on the other hand, uses the I of Authority. The author is writing as a journalists revealing their view on the situation at hand and comparing it with past similar occurrances in the same country. The author portrays their views on Nigeria by using several examples to illistrate the problem of human rights in Nigeria as a reoccurring issue. As a journalists, Soyinka sounds like she has more authority because she only uses the "I" in a very brief paragraph voicing her beliefs. The rest of the article is wriiten in a third party prespective retelling what has happened in history.

There is a possiblitiy that ease of communication can be reversed, not in the sense of technology but in the regulations that could be imposed on communications. The ease of communications allows people around the world to communicate with each other with a click of a button. This allows vast amounts of information to be transferred from country to country. This may be seen as a threat to many secretive services of governments with confidential information. After the attacks of 9/11, some governmental companies have banned cellular phones from the work place and plane rides. The regulation of communications can also be found in something as small as a file transfer on a students computers. With the downloads and sharing of files, music industries have placed many regulations on sharing music. Due to the increase in easeness of sharing information through communications, regulation upon regulation can be made until the ease of communications is reversed.

Rhetoric in my life

My most distinct memory of using rhetoric effectively was at a job interview to work at a medical examiner's office. At an interview, your appearance is you first argument of why they should hire you. Dressing up in a mice shirt with nice pants shows the interviewers you are organized and that you respect the job. I decided to wear a black collared short with thin white line and gray pants. The dark colors gives an impression of being independant and strong (at least enogh to work in a medical examiner's office). In the question and answer part, all my answers are to convince them why I am right for the job. Im my mind I think of what is the most honest way of answering what they want to hear. Many of the answers contain my own experiences and beliefs that can contribute to the well-being of the position applied for. One of the most obvious presentations is the body language during the interview. Sitting straight with my legs crossed suggests a proper and serious attitude towrds working in a office. I made sure not to cross my arms so I don't seem to be closed. I think I actually tried to move my arms minimally to show that i am open to any opportunities but not so much to seem like I'm nervous.
To the potential employers, I think they agreed with the signals I sent, but they did sense a little nervousness. They tried to lighten up the interview with humor and asked questions that made me think about my experiences that can contibute to the company. In a way, they were using rhetoric to explain how the job can help my future. I believe thay accepted my signals for the job since they offered it to me, but I did not accept their rhetoric of the company because I declined the job offer.

Logic Alone Won't Win an Argument

I'm not sure why this article appeared in an airline article, but I found it interesting that the author actually explained the reasoning of his points with bubbles on the side. He's using rhetoric in a way to persuade you why he wrote the article a certain way. He used rhetoric to persuade us to agree with him by stating what a person would say on an everyday basis.
I agree with the author that emotion plays a large part of rhetoric, without emotions, its very hard to get the audience to agree with you whole-heartedly. Emotions help the audience connect to your point of view and make them understand where your points are coming from.
